9th Tank Destroyer Group

Unit History:  Unit was activated at Camp Hood, TX, on Oct. 13, 1942.  The unit moved to Camp Bowie, TX, on Dec. 4, 1942.  They then moved back to Camp Hood, TX, on Mar. 5, 1943, and then went to the Tennessee Maneuver Area on Jun. 18, 1943.  They then went to Camp Atterbury, IN, arriving on Aug. 29, 1943 as part of the IV Armored Corps and joined XX Corps on Oct. 9, 1943, later joining the XXII Corps on Jan. 25, 1944.  The unit moved to Camp Kilmer, NJ, on Mar. 31, 1944, to prepare for overseas shipment.  They shipped from the New York Port of Embarkation on May 3, 1944, and arrived in England on May 16, 1944.  They later shipped to France, landing on Jul. 31, 1944, where they acted as the XII Corps Advanced Information Center.  Moved into Luxembourg on Dec. 21, 1944, and then into Germany on Mar. 9, 1945.  The unit shipped back to the U.S., arriving in Hampton Roads, VA, on Aug. 9, 1945.  From there it was on to Camp Hood, TX, on Aug. 13, 1945, where there were eventually deactivated on Nov. 1, 1945.  Attached/Supported: XX, XXII and XII Corps.  Information gathered from WWII Order of Battle by Shelby L.
